What supervisors need to know about the imposter syndrome

Most research students feel like an imposter at some point. They may appear confident and be making good progress but internally they often experience self-doubt and question their ability. This can lead to avoidance, under- or over-work and heightened anxiety.

As a researcher you are probably familiar with the imposter syndrome yourself! (Are you really good enough to be here, or was it just luck!) Even if you haven't experienced it personally, it is crucial to understand its impact on your students.

In this workshop you will learn:

  • Identification: How to recognise signs of imposter syndrome in your students
  • Impact: Understanding the effects of imposter syndrome on students' wellbeing and academic performance
  • Strategies: Practical approaches to lessen the impact and support your students effectively.
